The gauchos have legendary, almost mythical status in Patagonia. Hardworking, horsemen par excellence, they are portrayed in flowing robes and baggy pantaloons. Today their garb is much more modern, but their attitude and poise leave you in no doubt as to their self-esteem. It's not arrogance, rather a comfort in who they are. We had stopped the bus to photograph a lake behind me when this gentleman came over the rise to investigate.
