I travelled to Spain expecting to find lots of romantic castles sitting majestically within the landscape. What I found was most of the castles surrounded by urban congestion and that often the only angle for a shot was the one in the guide book that had tempted me in the first place! However, Belmonte was a relatively small town and it is tucked down behind the hill, out of sight. Also out of sight is a new retirement village directly behind me. At least the old folks in this part of Spain will have something good to look at. And if you plan on visiting Spain, Belmonte gives you unfettered access to walk its halls and battlements. Even better, it's not restored and you get a real sense of its age, but without a loss of dignity.
